Dropbox is great at storage and syncing. We love it for that. Last week Dropbox announced that it is shutting down its Carousel App which will enable it to focus on storage and syncing and will leave the provision of tools to collect, curate and enjoy memories to other apps like Arkiver.

Carousel was Dropbox’s attempt to provide a better interface for its photo storage with a few other features like easier photo sharing sprinkled in. It never quite provided all the features that users were looking for. This gap became especially apparent with the launch of Google Photos in May that has created a new bar for “set and forget” photo storage services.

At Arkiver, we focus on the collection, curation and enjoyment of your most meaningful memories. It is about more than just photos and videos – with Arkiver you can write notes, record quotes, upload documents and use descriptions to capture all the details you want to remember. We give you the freedom to choose how you store, share and print memories by connecting with cloud storage providers, social media services and printing companies.

The truth is we don’t care where you store your stuff as long as you feel it is in the right place for you. Arkiver leaves storage to the experts. Our philosophy is that your stuff belongs to you and you should be able to store it where you want. We currently integrate with Dropbox and are working on integrations with Google Drive and other storage providers. Everything you collect through Arkiver is stored on your connected cloud storage account rather than on our servers.

Likewise, we believe you should be allowed to share your stuff how you want and print memories using services that you choose. With Arkiver you can share memories privately through the app (people you share with don’t need an Arkiver account to see what you share) or share via other social media services like Facebook or Instagram. You can print photos to Walgreens and we’re integrating with other services to enable you to print photobooks and other keepsakes you’ll treasure for years to come.

With Arkiver, you can organize your stuff, your way. Use collections and tags to connect moments together and bulk edit to create new collections and add tags to multiple moments at once. These are all features that were missing from Carousel.

Beyond the features you’d expect to see in a digital scrapbook tool, we’re creating exciting new ways to engage with your memories and rediscover your past. Arkiver’s Storyteller tool enables you to create a custom list of memory prompts to help you preserve your life stories and Flashback provides serendipitous moments from the past.

We’re happy that Dropbox has decided to kill off Carousel and focus on what it is best at: storage and syncing. At Arkiver, we’ll remain agnostic when it comes to where you gather your memories from, the device you use, where your memories are stored and how you share and print them. We’ll continue to focus our development efforts on what we’re best at: helping you collect, organize and privately share your memories.
